Thousands of islands throughout the archipelago

Aviation in Indonesia serves as a critical means of connecting the thousands of islands throughout the archipelago. Indonesia is a sprawling archipelago comprising 17,508 islands with 922 of those permanently inhabited. With an estimated population of over 255 million and also due to the growth of the middle-class and the advent of low-cost carriers in the recent decade, Indonesia is widely regarded as an emerging market for air travel in the region. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has predicted that Indonesia will become the world’s sixth largest air travel market by 2034. Around 270 million passengers are predicted to fly from and within Indonesia by 2034.

The country’s traffic growth needs to be supported by the aviation infrastructure, both on the ground and in the air. For Indonesia this means building a world-class hub, managing scarce capacity to global standards and modernizing air traffic management. The country had 58.9 million domestic and 13.7 million international passengers last year, representing year-on-year growth of 6% and 5%, respectively.

Indonesia’s aviation market holds huge potential. New airplanes are coming in great numbers and the passengers will be there to fill them, but it remains to be seen whether new airports can be build fast enough to accommodate both the planes and the people. The liberalized aviation market is expected to boost flight frequency in the region, enhance connectivity between the region’s aviation markets, and encourage higher service quality.
